Mother of Binge Drinking Victim Urges Students and Parents to Discuss Signs of Alcohol Poisoning, Emphasize Peer Responsibility Prior to Spring Break
During the next few weeks, thousands of college students across the U.S. will travel abroad or take other trips during Spring Break, a vacation period known for abusive drinking. Kathleen Quartaro, a Choose Responsibility volunteer and mother of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student who passed away after a night of binge drinking during her freshman year, urges parents and students to discuss the signs of alcohol poisoning and ways to encourage peer responsibility before Spring Break trips begin. Oregon?s High School Dropouts Cost State $400 Million Annually
Oregon's high school dropouts are costing state taxpayers more than $400 million per year, according to a study released today by the Foundation for Educational Choice and Cascade Policy Institute. The study, Oregon's High School Dropouts: Examining the economic and social costs, finds that Oregon's dropout rate is resulting in more enrollments in the state's Medicaid program, higher incarceration rates, and lost state revenue (because of unemployment and lower taxable incomes).
